Design & Engineering of the Integrated Electronic Lock for the VANMOOF S5/A5

The VANMOOF S5/A5 electronic Kicklock is a compact, frame-integrated e-bike lock designed for stealth urban use. With tap on the button in the dropout, the lock and alarm engage, no key required. The system unlocks automatically when the rider returns, enabling quick stop-and-go use.

As part of VanMoof’s Amsterdam R&D team, I helped develop the integrated locking system from early concepts through to a production-ready implementation. My work included developing the mechanical architecture, generating and translating design concepts into cosmetic, mechanical and electronic proof of principle prototypes, and refining the system through iterative testing to validate its form, fit, behavior and functionality.

Throughout the project, I collaborated closely with mechanical engineers, electronics engineers, firmware, and UX teams to ensure integration between physical components and digital systems, resulting in a locking solution that is both technically robust and intuitive to use.
