End-to-End Product Development - Integrated Electronic Lock Design & Engineering for e-bike_VANMOOF S5/A5
The VANMOOF S5/A5 electronic Kicklock is a compact, frame-integrated e-bike lock designed for stealth city use. With a simple press on the dropout button, the lock and alarm engage—no key required. The system unlocks automatically, supporting quick stop-and-go riding in urban environments.
In the Amsterdam R&D department of the scale-up Vanmoof, I was closely involved in the integrated e-bike lock design and engineering, innovating hands-on from early concept sketches to functional prototypes—cosmetic, mechanical, and electronic (Arduino)—and to a production-ready implementation. My work included developing the mechanical architecture, translating design concepts into testable models, and refining the system through iterative prototyping to validate form, fit, behavior and function.
Throughout the project, I collaborated closely with mechanical enigneers, electronics engineers, firmware, and UX teams to ensure integration between physical components and digital systems, resulting in a locking solution that is both technically robust and intuitive to use.
This project combined technical problem-solving, detail-oriented mechanical design, and iterative testing to deliver a compact and innovative locking solution built directly into the bike frame.
